Scott Styris told Sports18: “I am a huge fan of the leadership qualities that Shreyas Iyer has, and I think he has a real potential to become India’s captain. That’s why I want to see him in the team and give him as many chances as possible.”
The former cricketer added: “I don’t like the negativity surrounding Shreyas Iyer’s struggle against the short balls, as everyone knows it, it’s no secret. His struggle against the short ball is an issue. I think all the teams attack him, fast bowlers with bouncers on the body and down the armpits, and I don’t think he has found a way to deal with that.
In this regard, Shreyas Iyer is almost like Suresh Raina, where the teams know where to attack. Now Shreyas has to find a way to be successful against the short balls. If he can do that, I think he will be one of the main players of the Indian team. I like all the qualities of Shreyas, and he is very talented. I want him to be given constant opportunities to overcome this weakness, and if he is not successful, you can find other options.”
