The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for hearing of the Babri demolition criminal case by one month after the status report of Special Judge SK Yadav, who is hearing the case, was released on September 20. Earlier, time was given till August 31 to complete the trial. LK Advani, Murli Manohar Jaishi, Uma Bharat and several other senior leaders are accused in the case.
It may be recalled that on July 6, senior BJP leader LK Advani had filed his statement before the special CBI court in the 19 Babri Masjid demolition case through video conferencing. Asked more than 100 questions, Advani’s lawyer said he had denied all the allegations against him. After hearing the case on May 8, the apex court had fixed August 31, 2020, as the deadline for completion of the trial.
Special Judge SK Yadav wrote a letter to the apex court seeking more time. The six-month deadline has already expired on April 30. On July 15, the apex court directed the senior BJP leaders to reconsider their decision. A special CBI judge in Lucknow, who is hearing a conspiracy in the Babri Masjid demolition case against Uma Bharti Kalyan Singh and others, had directed him to complete the trial within nine months and pronounce a verdict. A bench headed by Justice RK Nariman directed that the judge should complete the hearing within three months and hear the verdict in three months.
