One Day Internationals (ODIs) Should Be Dropped- Wasim Akram: Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has said that One Day Internationals (ODIs) should be dropped from the international cricket calendar. He also noted that no stadium would come to watch the ODI match after a few days, especially in Asian countries.
Akram also backed England’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes’ decision to retire from ODIs. The left-handed batsman recently said that managing the workload of all three formats is getting overwhelming for him. Let us tell you that Stokes had decided to retire from ODI cricket at 31.
In the Tuffers Cricket Club podcast, Wasim Akram said, “I feel that one-day cricket should be abolished. In England, you have full stadiums. No one will come to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, or South Africa to watch ODI matches. The studios there will not be filled.
T20 cricket is more accessible – Wasim Akram
Akram further said, “He is doing it because he has to. It happens just fine after the first ten overs. Score one runs on each ball. Four fielders are out, and 200 to 220 runs are scored in 40 overs. After this, 100 runs are scored in the last ten overs. It’s like running a mill.”
Regarding the retirement of Ben Stokes, Akram said, “It is sad to see Ben Stokes retire from ODI cricket, but even as a commentator, ODI cricket now seems to be a longer format. Especially after the arrival of T20. As a player, I can imagine. Fifty overs, then another 50 overs. After that, opco has to do pre-game, post-game, and lunch games too, which is problematic.
He further said, “T20 is comparatively easy. The match is over within a few hours. There is a lot of money in leagues around the world. I think part of modern cricket is just T20 or Test cricket. One day cricket is slowly dying out. It is very tiring for a player to play one-day matches.
