It happened because Tickner dropped the towel during his runup.
According to Rule 20.4.2.6 of the MCC Law of Cricket, the umpire can declare that ball as a dead ball if the batsman is disturbed or distracted by any sound or anything while bowling. It will be considered only if the batsman has this problem while playing the match.
Whereas, according to the rules of 20.4.2.7, 41.4, and 41.5, if the striker is intentionally disturbed or distracted, the umpire can still declare that ball as a dead ball.
