Gujarat: Five COVID-19 patients killed in fire at Rajkot hospital, CM Rupani orders probe

Five Covid-19 patients were killed and six others suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out in the ICU of Uday Shivanand Covid Hospital in the Mavdi area of Gujarat’s Rajkot early Friday morning.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered a probe into the incident, ANI reported.

The six injured have been admitted to two other facilities of Gokul Hospital, the private hospital running the Uday Shivanand Covid Hospital. Bodies of those killed have been sent to PDU Hospital for post-mortem, police said.

The fire broke out around 1 am in the ICU where 33 patients were admitted, fire brigade official J B Theva said according to news agency/

“The fire is under control. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet. The rescued patients have been shifted to other COVID-19 hospitals,” PTI quoted Theva as saying.

In August, eight COVID-19 patients were killed after a fire broke out on the top floor of a four-storey private hospital in Ahmedabad.
