Adelaide Test: Steve Smith scores less than 5 for 1st time in his Test career vs India

Australia batting mainstay Steve Smith, who otherwise enjoys a brilliant record vs India, registered his lowest total against the visitors as R Ashwin sent him packing only for 1 on Day 2. Smith survived a run-out chance in his first over on Day 2 but then Ashwin got Smith for 1, the lowest score for the Australia star in 50 innings in Test cricket.

This is the first time that Smith has scored less than 5 runs against India in 21 Test innings. Smith’s previous lowest total vs India came during Mohali Test in March 2013 when he was dismissed for 5.

Notaby, Smith has scored 1429 runs in 10 matches against India at a staggering average of 84.05. He has hit 10 hundreds against the Asian side. Smith is expected to play a key role in the Test series as Australia are without David Warner for the day-night Test. Warner picked up a groin injury and has been ruled out of the series opener.

Bumrah removed both Australia openers in quick succession before tea to leave the hosts rattled on the second day at Adelaide Oval on Friday.Matthew Wade survived a testing introduction to the position before being trapped lbw for eight. Burns departed in Bumrah’s next over, also for eight, when a yorker landed low on his pad.

Earlier, Mitchell Starc took 4-53 as Australia ripped through the Indian tail in the first half an hour of play to dismiss the tourists for 244. Australia took last four Indian wickets for just 11 runs after visitors resumed on 233-6. Australia captain Tim Paine’s side needed just 22 minutes and 4.1 overs to wrap up India’s first innings.
