Xi Jinping issues call for transforming Chinese military into world-class force by 2027

Chinese PLA must make use of cutting-edge technologies and enhanced training under real combat conditions to win wars, China’s President and head of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xi Jinping said on Wednesday. Aged 67, Xi Jinping made the remarks while addressing a meeting of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of which he is the chairman.

In China, the CMC is the apex body commanding the two million-strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

While reiterating the Communist Party of China’s commitment towards strengthening the Chinese military, Xi Jinping also said that a new type of military training system must be established faster to transform the PLA into a world-class force, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The statements by Chinese President Xi Jinping come at a time when China and India have been engaged in an intense military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh for the past six months. Multiple rounds of diplomatic and military talks have been held between the two countries to further disengagement and de-escalation between troops.

In addition, the Chinese military has also been parading its prowess in the disputed South China Sea and over Taiwan.

The Communist Party of China in its recent key conclave finalised plans to build a ‘fully modern’ military at par with the US military by 2027. China’s military spending amounted to USD 232 billion in 2019m according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

In 2020, China approved a defence budget of USD 179 billion which is the second-highest in the world after America’s USD 732 billion.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, while addressing the Central Military Commission on Wednesday, also said that key changes are being made to China’s military combat situation, security environment and forms of modern warfare.

Calling for better strategic planning and top-level design to transform Chinese military training, Xi Jinping also issued a call for improving the PLA’s joint operations capabilities. The scientific and technological literacy of officers and soldiers must be raised and bureaucratism in training must be done away with, Chinese President Xi Jinping went on to say.
