WHO adds bleaching, chlorine used in Covid-19 sanitisation to Eluru’s mystery sickness suspect list

The experts from the World Health Organization have added bleaching and chlorine used in Covid-19 sanitisation measures to the suspect list of the mysterious illness in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru.

World Health Organisation experts told the CM that “they suspect bleaching and chlorine used in sanitation measures as part of Covid-19 prevention might have been the cause.”

A two-member WHO team, which arrived in Eluru on Tuesday, surveyed the affected areas, collecting the food intake habits, health details of the victims.

Amid central teams and a two-member World Health Organisation (WHO) reaching Eluru, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday conducted a video conference and directed officials to find out the exact cause behind the outbreak.

Experts from WHO, AIIMS, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) participated in the video conference.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed authorities to conduct a detailed investigation to find out whether the illness was due to water contamination or some other cause.
Officials said the presence of lead and nickel in patients, possibly due to excessive use of pesticides in fields, might have caused the illness.
