Tokyo Olympics 2021: North Korea will not participate in Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo Olympics 2021-North Korea has said that it will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to the Corona epidemic.

A website of the North Korean Ministry of Sports said that the decision was taken during a meeting of the National Olympic Committee on 25 March. Members believed that players’ safety was paramount in the midst of the Corona epidemic.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry on Tuesday regretted the decision, saying that they hoped that the Tokyo Olympics would prove to be a way to improve mutual relations between the two Koreas.

Japan’s Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa told reporters that she was still awaiting confirmation and could not comment immediately. The Olympic Committee of Japan said that North Korea has not yet informed it that it will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

North Korea sent 22 players to the Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018. The ‘cheering group’ of women, apart from government officials, artists, journalists, had 230 members. In those games, North and South Korea marched under the blue map symbolizing the unified Korean peninsula.
