Muslim League’s women wing urges PM Modi not to raise marriageable age for women

The Muslim League’s ladies wing has opposed the projected move to hike the legal nubile age of girls from eighteen to twenty one years in a very letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him against taking a ‘hasty’ call on the necessary social issue.

The letter, written by the secretary of Indian Union ladies League, P K Noorbana Rasheed, says delaying the age of wedding can fall down to “live-in relationships” and “illegitimate relations”.

She aforesaid once several developing countries had brought down the legal status of wedding from twenty one to eighteen years considering the biological and social wants, it’s not correct for Asian nation to require a hasty call in favour of raising women’s legal status for wedding.

Last year Kerala had reported 300-odd cases of under-age marriages.
