NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday took over the investigation into the Hathras gang rape and murder case from the Uttar Pradesh Police.
The Uttar Pradesh government had recommended a CBI probe into the matter amid widespread demand.
Besides the alleged gang-rape case, the Uttar Pradesh government has sought a search by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the FIR associated with the alleged criminal conspiracy to spread caste conflict, instigating violence, incidents of vicious propaganda by sections of media and political interests.
A 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped on September 14 following which she was admitted to the J N Medical College Hospital in Aligarh with serious injuries. She was mentioned Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on September 28 after her condition showed no signs of improvement.
She died subsequent day at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital where she had been brought for treatment. The victim was cremated within the dead of the night near her home on September 30.
Her family alleged that they were forced by the local police to hurriedly conduct her last rites. Local cops , however, had said the cremation was administered “as per the needs of the family”.
Protests are held in various parts of the country over the incident.
